A couple of months ago, I had an interaction with a card mate during a sanctioned round regarding playing music. I informed him that I don’t listen to music during scoring rounds, or any rounds for that matter. Since then I have started to listen to music more including the previous couple of scoring rounds.

While I did enjoy listening to the music, I didn’t seem to play that well while it was playing. The first two scorecards were from Sunday, while listening to music. I don’t score that well on NorthStar in general, because when I play a solo scoring round, I tend to use it as a warm-up as well. This leads to some missed scoring opportunities during the first six holes or so.

This score is 6 strokes off my best. Given the number of times I have played the course and my perceived skill level, I should score about 5 strokes better on average. I do think the par is 3 strokes too low.

Overall, it was a lackluster effort with poor putting which generally is a result of two things… The first would be lack of focus/effort, which could have been caused by the music. The second is usually from poor drives putting me on the outside of the circle 1 or into circle 2. I get close enough on the putt for an easy tap in, but that doesn’t help one’s stats.
I played a little better, but basically the same on my second round. The putting was a little better, but still lackluster. Scrambling improved, but the driving percentage was exactly the same.
While I haven’t kept to my goal of keeping the same bag for the entire season… I am glad that I put my newer Ballista back in it for certain shots. The drive on AWOL hole 11 is one of those reasons. I have been struggling to throw the Thrasher well enough, but once I threw the Ballista, it flew like it used to.

This throw equals my previous best drive and even though it’s close to a tree, it gives me a chance at birdie or a fairly easy par.

AWOL hole 2 is another hole I have been struggling with for the last year or so. I decided to try my Musket and it basically landed near the basket and skipped down the incline. It’s been a long time since I threw a drive too hard on this hole and I look forward to dialing the speed of the throw to hopefully get a few more birdies during my future rounds.
My Fuse has shown some potential in the couple of weeks I have thrown it. It’s an understable disc that needs to be thrown a certain way to get the most out of it. On AWOL hole 5, I threw it that certain way and it made the first gap, then the second and put me in a good position for birdie.

Which I didn’t get… but I had the chance for one.
I have been waffling about which disc to throw on AWOL hole 8 since my previous go-to disc started flying too straight. I am going with the slower speed Verdict to prevent any big skips after the disc lands.
A small improvement from the previous round. I don’t really mind a “bogey” on hole 8 given it’s the hardest one. It’s interesting that each round had two holes with bad drives.

A couple of positive takeaways… I birdied hole 11 both times with my forehand drive instead of a backhand drive. I was able to “par” holes 7 and 9 both times as well.
This is more like it! Only my third solo scoring round under par on AWOL and my second best. With out the music, it seemed like I could concentrate better and have a conversation with myself as well. Keep in mind that most players have to play multiple roles… caddy, coach, motivator, and player.

It was nice to get the easier birdies, but I still see many more strokes to remove from the scorecard that are in my skill range. As with almost all players, it all about consistency… or if you are Yoda… “Control, control, you must learn control!”

Today was encouraging because I felt like I was in the moment and flow of a round of disc golf. I will have to save the music for maybe practice rounds or just go back to enjoying the sounds of nature while I am walking the course. I have been trying to slow down my footwork on my drives and that seems to be helping a bit as well. With a tournament coming up in a week and a half, it’s time to start dialing in my game for A.W.O.L., NorthStar, and Wreckreator.

Since music can always be listened to in the car and at home, why not enjoy the sounds of nature or even just the silence of the woods (if you don’t get too close to a squirrel) as a departure from always listening to noise. Not everyone gets to enjoy the ease of being in nature that North Idahoans do, so we might as well not take it for granted. I am sure Yoda would agree.
